The classes include:
- Thursday, April 7: Introduction to Disaster Preparedness -- teaches students fundamental techniques to prepare themselves, their families and neighbors in times of disaster, and how to stay safe.
- Tuesday, April 19: Fire Suppression and Utility Controls on Tuesday, April 19 -- reviews proper use of fire extinguishers and, weather permitted, students will be able to get hands-on experience using a fire extinguisher during class.
The classes run from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Fire Training Center, 35 Firemen's Memorial Drive.
The full RCERT curriculum offers eight basic CERT classes that educate volunteers ages 14 and older about basic disaster preparedness skills that will enable them to be better prepared for themselves, their families and their neighbors in times of crisis. Participants can take any class of their choice or the entire eight-class set, which can be completed over a course of eight months to a year. Other classes include disaster psychology, light search and rescue, disaster medical I & II and incident command.
Fully trained RCERT members graduate with a certificate of completion and become eligible for deployment and additional training. These volunteers can be mobilized in times of disasters or crises to support and extend the services of first responders, freeing them to attend to more specialized calls. RCERT members can provide services such as supply distribution, fire safety, damage assessment, shelter assembly, neighbor well-checks, light search and rescue, and disaster medical operations. In noncrisis times, volunteers will educate the community about disaster preparedness through coordination of public education campaigns and events.
