Go ahead and indulge. Wednesday, April 12 is National Grilled Cheese Sandwich Day, one of the top-rated comfort foods in the U.S. It even has its own Facebook page.
According to food historians -- and the National Grilled Cheese Sandwich Day website -- cooked bread and cheese dates back to ancient times and is enjoyed across the world in many cultures.
The modern version of the sandwich originated in the 1920s when inexpensive sliced bread and American cheese became easily available. It was originally made as an open-faced sandwich.
Government cookbooks describe Navy cooks broiling “American cheese filling sandwiches” during World War II, says the site.
Today, folks mix and match cheeses, bread, and seasonings or add sauteed vegetables or herb-infused oils to make it more of a gourmet treat. Others prefer it with tomato soup or simply on its own in all its gooey glory.
