Failing Area Restaurateur, Family Member, Facing Life In Prison For Arson, Insurance Fraud
A failing restaurateur who conspired with members of his family to burn down his Hudson Valley business as part of an insurance fraud scheme is facing a host of charges, authorities announced.
Orange County resident Zef Gjurashaj, age 59, of Newburgh, and his nephew’s wife, Yonkers resident Marina Gjurashaj, age 37, were indicted and charged with a series of crimes for allegedly conspiring to burn down his restaurant in 2017.
Specifically, the two were charged by an Orange County grand jury with:
First-degree arson;
Conspiracy;
Insurance fraud;
Tax fraud;
Various other offenses.

Duo Admits To Roles In Burglary Of Area Store Leading To Fatal Crash
Two men have pleaded guilty to taking part in a burglary of an area motor-sports store that eventually led to the death of an occupant in their get-away van.
Orange County District Attorney David M. Hoovler announced on Monday, Oct. 18, that Luis Colon, age 27, and Jose Tavera, age 18, both of New Jersey, pleaded guilty to charges related to the burglary of a Town of Newburgh motor-sports store, in Orange County, where an occupant of the van that they were in which was transporting the stolen motorbikes and ATVs crashed, killing one occupant.

Area Duo Nabbed With Heroin, Other Drugs During Traffic Stop, Police Say
Two people were arrested by state police for alleged possession of drugs following a traffic stop in the area.
The arrests in Orange County of Saiyquana Reed, age 21, and Darwin Santos, both of Poughkeepsie, took place around 2:30 a.m., Saturday, March 21 on Route 9W in Newburgh, said New York State Police Trooper Steven Nevel.
According to Nevel, the trooper was patrolling Route 9W in Newburgh when he stopped a 2007 Nissan Versa driven by Reed for a traffic violation.
While interviewing Reed, the trooper smelled marijuana coming from inside of the vehicle, Nevel said.

Traffic Alert: Lane Closures Scheduled, Detour Expected During Route 9W Roadwork
Crews are set to begin an extensive road resurfacing project on busy roadways in Orange County, which will lead to delays and detours for motorists.
The New York State Department of Transportation announced that from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., beginning on Monday, Aug. 27, there will be weekday paving projects on Route 9W in Newburgh. The paving project is expected to last through Wednesday, Sept. 19. During the roadwork, there will be lane closures with alternating traffic, as well as a detour for a portion of northbound traffic in Newburgh.
