Hudson Valley Man Driving High Sentenced After Crash Paralyzed Teen
A Hudson Valley man was sentenced to prison after pleading guilty to driving high on pot and causing a crash that paralyzed a teen.
Orange County resident Chauncey Smith, age 23, of Pine Bush, was sentenced on Tuesday, July 16, to three to nine years in prison in connection with the Monday, August 14, 2023 crash, said Orange County District Attorney David M. Hoovler.
The teenage victim, who was paralyzed as a result of the crash, spoke at sentencing about the impact the defendant’s crimes had on his life, Hoovler said.

A Hudson Valley man was apprehended hiding inside a business after he allegedly attempted to break into another business.
Orange County resident Samuel Espada, age 44, of Harriman, was arrested on Monday, Aug. 21 in the town of Newburgh.
According to Lt. Peter Talarico of the Town of Newburgh Police, said officers were dispatched to a criminal mischief call at State Farm Insurance on Route 17K around 830 a.m.

Man, Woman From Orange County Caught With Fentanyl, Crack During Traffic Stop, Police Say
A convicted felon and a second woman were busted by New York State Police troopers with fentanyl, prescription pills, other drugs and an illegal weapon in the Hudson Valley.
Troopers stopped Newburgh resident Roy Brown, 59, on Route 17K in Newburgh on Wednesday, Aug. 12, when he committed a traffic violation, police said.
During the subsequent stop, police said that troopers learned that there was a "billy club" in the vehicle. Brown and his passenger, New Windsor resident Alexis Lynch. 29, were asked to exit the Nissan Altima.

New York State Police troopers busted 17 motorists from the Hudson Valley and Fairfield County who were allegedly driving while impaired this past weekend.

On Friday, Nov. 16, State Police from Middletown arrested Kenneth Smellegar, 48, of Pearl River, for DWI. He was traveling on Route 17 in Goshen when he was stopped for a vehicle and traffic law violation. The investigation revealed that he was impaired by alcohol and he was subsequently arrested.
