Math, English Language Arts Standardized Test Scores Improve Across NY
New York State students saw an uptick in standardized testing scores for students in grades 3 through 8, the State Education Department announced. The Education Department released the results of the 2019 English language arts (ELA) and math tests. In ELA, 45.4 percent of test-takers scored at the proficient level. In math, 46.7 graded at a proficient level. The numbers represent a .02 percent increase for ELA and 2.2 percent for math from 2018. 987,398 students took the ELA, while 948,606 took the math test. State Cites Three Rockland Schools As Needing Improvement
The New York State Department of Education has identified three Rockland County schools that are in need of improvement. This week, the Department of Education announced a new list of 370 schools that need improvement, including schools in East Ramapo and North Rockland. State Education Commissioner MaryEllen Elia identified 106 school districts as “target districts,” 245 schools for comprehensive support and Improvement and 125 schools for “Targeted Support and Improvement.” Those in the latter two groups require districts and schools to create improvement plans. PTA Apologizes For Keeping Ramapo Police From Speaking At Event
RAMAPO, N.Y. -- Ramapo police and the local PTA have made up after the parents group stopped the chief and a lieutenant from speaking at a breakfast with the state education commissioner because they were carrying their service weapons. The Central Hudson Region Parent Teacher Association (PTA) apologized after police called out the association for the Saturday morning incident.
