Storm Update: Tornado Watch Issued For These NY Counties
As thunderstorms, some severe, sweep through the region, a Tornado Watch has now been issued for parts of New York. The watch is in effect until 9 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 12 in the counties shown in yellow. New System Packed With Thunderstorms, Heavy Rain Could Cause Flooding
A new system taking aim at the region will bring thunderstorms and heavy rain that could cause flooding. Current forecast models project the system will arrive from west to east starting late Thursday morning, Aug. 10. Heavy rain is expected to begin in the New York City area, Hudson Valley, and Capital regions, and western Connecticut around midday Thursday and later in the afternoon in Massachusetts and eastern Connecticut. A summertime uptick in both COVID-19 hospitalizations and cases is being reported by the Centers for Disease Control & Prevention (CDC). “After roughly six, seven months of steady declines, things are starting to tick back up again,” said CDC’s COVID incident manager Dr. Brendan Jackson, according to a report by NPR. The hottest days of the summer will linger into the first half of the weekend before an approaching cold front ignites a new round of severe storms that will lead to a big change in the weather pattern. The first hurricane of the 2023 season formed in the Atlantic before quickly being downgraded a short time later. Tropical Storm Don strengthened into a hurricane late Saturday afternoon, July 22 with sustained winds of 75 miles per hour, the National Hurricane Center said. Separate rounds of slow-moving storms with heavy downpours at times will bring a new risk of flash flooding to the area into early next week. A Severe Thunderstorm Warning has been issued for parts of the area. The warning, which went into effect at 3 p.m. Saturday, July 8, covers most of Rockland County and parts of Northern Bergen County. A line of thunderstorms, some severe, is sweeping through the region from west to east. Storm activity first began in areas west of the Hudson River in the early afternoon on Friday, July 7.
