Rockland Community College Receives $250K For Fieldhouse Renovations

SUFFERN, N.Y. -- State Sen. Bill Larkin, R-C-I, 39th District, has secured a $250,000 state and municipal funding grant to help make needed renovations and improvements to Rockland Community College’s Eugene Levy Fieldhouse, located on RCC’s Suffern campus.

The grant funding will go toward fully renovating the locker rooms to enhance the safety, functionality and aesthetics of the facility, as well as adding additional restrooms and facilities for families.

Tzipora Reitman, RCC’s director of communications, said the renovations are expected to take about two months from start to finish.

The day the work will begin has not yet been announced.

Larkin, whose Senate district includes the towns of Haverstraw and Stony Point in Rockland County, has hundreds of constituents who attend the college, Reitman said.

Among them are a number from Orange County, where Larkin serves the city of Newburgh and several neighboring towns.

“The college is very appreciative of Sen. Larkin’s efforts, which will help RCC continue to serve a wide and diverse audience who take advantage of the facilities at our fieldhouse,” Reitman said.

Constructed in 1975, the fieldhouse, a 2-acre, 90,000-square-foot facility is the largest of its type in the Northeast, serving as a center for public and commercial events, as well as home to RCC’s Exercise & Human Performance department, the RCC varsity teams and a series of children’s sports camps hosted by the college.

Reitman said the venue’s events also include the World Fishing and Outdoor Exposition in March, along with auto, RV, home and dog shows, an astronomy forum, track meets, a youth festival and job fairs.

It is also the site of a number of local middle school and high school graduations, Reitman said.

In addition, the fieldhouse serves as the emergency evacuation site for Rockland County residents in the case of a hazardous event and is included as the county’s emergency shelter facility in the mandated federal Homeland Security Emergency Support Functions plan to provide shelter for residents, people with special needs and pets.
