Parents File Civil Rights Lawsuit Against East Ramapo Schools, Officials

RAMAPO, N.Y. -- A class-action civil right lawsuit filed Friday, Nov. 20 by parents in several East Ramapo Hasidic yeshivas, accuses education officials of failing to provide boys with a basic education, according to lohud.com.

The suit charges the state, the school district and four yeshivas with failing to offer adequate secular coursework for boys, and requires them to do so next school year. It also asks for an unspecified amount of money damages for former students, said lohud.com.

Filed by seven plaintiffs, some former students, in U.S. District Court in Manhattan by the public-interest law firm Advocates for Justice, the suit alleges that the students are legally entitled to, at the very least, a minimally adequate secular education in addition to their religious education, reported lohud.com.
