$3 Million State Aid Could Bring Full-Day Kindergarten To East Ramapo

SPRING VALLEY, N. Y. -- Full-day kindergarten is one of several enhancements East Ramapo Central School District Superintendent Deborah Wortham is eyeing for the $3 million state aid package to help improve the troubled school district, lohud.com reports.

At a public meeting earlier this week, Wortham unveiled her proposal that also includes spending about $1.7 million to bring back arts, theater and dance classes for students in kindergarten through sixth-grade. The bulk of the $3 million, though, would be used to make improvements and hire kindergarten teachers so the district can offer up to 11 sections of all-day kindergarten, lohud.com says.

Another public meeting is set for Sept. 28 that will include the district's monitor Charles Szuberla and New York State Commissioner of Education MaryEllen Elia. The state aid package approved earlier this year for the district requires district officials to work out an implementation plan with the state-appointed monitor, lohud.com reports.
