A recent study found that 85 percent of artificial Christmas trees made in China that were sold in the United States tested positive for PVC (polyvinyl chloride) plastics, which is known to contain lead. Other holiday decorations, such artificial wreaths, stockings and figurines, also carry the risk of containing lead.
Carlucci said that as we enter the holiday season, he wants everyone, especially parents of small children, to be aware of the presence of these harmful chemicals in decorations.
His bill would require a warning label be put on any holiday decoration containing lead that would read, "WARNING: CONTAINS LEAD. MAY BE HARMFUL. MAY GENERATE DUST CONTAINING LEAD."
The bill also contains a provision allowing for a civil penalty of $1,000 for every violation.
