Officers responded around 4 a.m. to a call to Mahwah Police and found a car mostly submerged in water near the New York State Thruway overpass in Suffern, Suffern Police reported.
Before an attempt to see whether people were in the vehicle, police were informed that four people were found soaking wet walking along Routes 17 and 287. Two of the four were taken to Good Samaritan Hospital in Suffern for hypothermia treatment.
Any criminal charges are pending until an investigation is completed, and the vehicle is pulled out of the river by a tow truck with help from a diver, Suffern Police said.
