Two arrests made in the village particularly stood out, said Osborn in his post, “The Chief’s Corner.”
The first involved a man who, police said, went on an unprovoked rampage at a local church, beating an elderly employee and destroying a stained-glass window and other precious objects in its sanctuary.
The arresting officer, Osborn said, had to take down the aggressive suspect with a Taser.
The other more recently found police tracking a suspect from his ex-girlfriend’s home, where he had been hiding in a closet, to the grounds of a nearby school, where he was cornered by the department’s K-9, Patriot.
“I must say that being Tased in one incident and being apprehended by our K-9 in the other is not a good way for these suspects to spend their day!!!,” Osborn wrote in his post.
Police also conducted safety checks with the assistance of the state Department of Transportation and took “several unsafe trucks” off the roads, Osborn said.
On the more pleasant side of the coin were the department’s volunteer recognition program and the completion of its DARE hockey season, Osborn wrote.
Suffern police recognize community members who have gone “above and beyond” for their fellow citizens.
It’s a great way, Osborn said, to “promote positive happenings” in the village.
DARE, a nationwide substance abuse and violence prevention education program, sponsors local hockey games.
The season, which wrapped up a week ago, drew a lot of players, Osborn said.
Thanking the coaches and others who helped make the season a success, Osborn said that DARE’s end-of-year barbecue was held at the Suffern pool.
Participants were treated to free food and music.
Osborn recognized the assistance of the village’s Recreation Department as well as food donations made by Shop Rite of Ramsey and the Inserra family.
The Ice Factory provided the frozen treats and Total DJ’s, the entertainment.
