Spring Valley Teen Could Draw 16-Year Sentence In Fatal Cell-Phone Robbery

SPRING VALLEY, N.Y. -- A Spring Valley teen who admitted bashing another teen in the head with a rock while stealing his cell phone and wallet, faces 16 years in prison, according to lohud.com.

Jiwan Coleman, 16, pleaded guilty Dec. 13 to first-degree manslaughter, in exchange for a plea deal of 16 years in the June 26 robbery and attack of Ruben Suchite Torres, 16, said lohud.com.

Torres died on July 2, after lingering in a coma for days at Westchester Medical Center, added lohud.com.

The attack occurred near North Myrtle Avenue and Grove Street when Torres was walking home from the Spring Valley Transportation Center, said lohud.com.

A Spring Valley High School student from Guatemala, Torres worked as a dishwasher and prepared food at the Nanuet Hotel, said lohud.com.

Coleman, who remains in the county jail on $3.5 million bail, is set to be sentenced in March 2017.
