Ramapo Police Probe Cause Of Hillcrest House Fire

RAMAPO, N.Y. -- Ramapo police are investigating a possible suspicious fire that happened in the hamlet of Hillcrest on Monday.

Police and fire officials were called to a home on Jefferson Avenue in the Ramapo hamlet of Hillcrest on Monday to investigate a fire that had apparently started in a closet.

Police said the fire appears to have started in a bedroom closet in an apartment on Jefferson Avenue.

The fire was contained to the closet area, police said.

Ramapo detectives and officers from the county’s Bureau of Criminal Investigation are looking into the cause of the blaze.

Besides the fire, Ramapo police handled 121 other calls Monday: 19 alarm activations; nine medical emergencies; one other fire; and two arrests for driving with a suspended license and for driving while ability impaired by drugs.

Police were also called to a dozen motor vehicle accidents at the following locations: Lackawanna Trail, Montebello; Route 59, Montebello; Jon Leif Lane, Chestnut Ridge; Red Schoolhouse Road, Chestnut Ridge; College Road, Airmont; Besen Parkway, Airmont; Route 202, Ramapo; Bluefield Drive, Spring Valley; Main Street, Monsey; Route 306, Wesley Hills; and Route 306, Kaser.

One crash involved injuries and two accidents were hit-and-runs, police said.
