A Ramapo police officer responded to a motor vehicle accident on Sandy Brook Road on Thursday night, and upon arrival, found that one of the drivers was unresponsive in his vehicle.
According to police, the officer came to the conclusion that the driver was under the influence of narcotics and had overdosed. The officer proceeded to break the window to the vehicle to gain access and administered Naloxone to reverse the effects of the overdose.
Naloxone blocks or reverses the effects of opioid medication, including extreme drowsiness, slowed breathing or loss of consciousness, according to drugs.com. It is used to treat a drug overdose in an emergency situation.
After being revived, the 31-year-old man - whose name was not disclosed - was treated at a local hospital and subsequently placed under arrest for driving while ability impaired by drugs and criminal possession of a controlled substance. He is currently being processed at the Ramapo Police Department and is due in court later this year to answer the charges.
