Jas Bartee, 41, of Spring Valley, was accused of breaking into a home in the Village of New Hempstead around 7:10 a.m., Sunday, by breaking a small window in the back of the home and reaching in and unlocking the door, said Detective Lt. Mark Emma.
Once inside the house, Bartee was confronted by the homeowner, causing him to run before having a chance to steal anything, Emma said.
Following his escape from the house, Bartee was seen by several witnesses running down the street to a cab.
Police were able to track down the cab and find out where Bartee had been dropped off. He was arrested within two-and-half hours of the crime, Emma said.
He was charged with burglary and is being held on $50,000 bond and is being held at the Rockland County Jail.
Ramapo officers also made two other arrests on Sunday; one for driving with a suspended registration and one for driving while intoxicated.
Police also made arrested a 22-year-old village of Suffern woman on a DWI charge after being involved in a motor vehicle accident on Haverstraw Road in the Village of Montebello. She was processed at police headquarters and is scheduled to appear in court on Sept. 14.
In addition, Ramapo police officer investigated 10 motor vehicle accidents including Smith Hill Road-Airmont, South Monsey Road-Airmont, Grandview Avenue-Viola, White Birch Drive-Pomona, North Pascack Road-Hillcrest, Route 306-Wesley Hills, Pinebrook Road-Chestnut Ridge, Firemen’s Memorial Drive-Northeast Ramapo, Ramapo Avenue-Hillburn and Haverstraw Road-Montebello.
The department responded to 121 calls for service on Sunday:
- 15 alarm activations,
- Two fires,
- 13 medical emergencies
