Ramapo Police Charge New Jersey Man With DWI

RAMAPO, N.Y. -- Ramapo police have arrested a 43-year-old resident of Mahwah, N.J., on a DWI charge.

The arrest came about when an officer stopped a car for a traffic violation early Friday morning during the midnight shift, police report.

After noticing the smell of an alcoholic beverage coming from the driver, he was put through several standardized field sobriety tests and charged with DWI, according to officials.

The suspect was processed at police headquarters, police report.

He is scheduled to appear in Montebello Justice Court next month to answer the charge, according to officials.

Ramapo police responded to 10 motor vehicle accidents on Friday.

The sites of the accidents included: South Airmont Road in Airmont; Route 59 in Airmont; North Airmont Road in Airmont; Maple Avenue in Monsey; Route 59 in Monsey; Orchard Street in Monsey; Rella Boulevard in Montebello; Old Nyack Turnpike in Chestnut Ridge; Sherwood Ridge Road in Pomona; and Route 202 in Wesley Hills.

Two of the accidents involved injuries; one was a hit-and-run, police report.

Ramapo police handled 144 calls on Friday, including 14 alarm activations, 11 medical emergencies and two fires.

The DWI was the only arrest reported.
