The one-car crash occurred at 8:25 a.m. Tuesday on Ewing Avenue in Spring Valley, police said.
An investigation into the crash found that the driver, Rouson Duque-Duarte was traveling at a high rate of speed on a sharp curve, lost control of the vehicle, struck a guardrail, and then crossed both lanes of traffic before hitting a curb on the other side of the street, police said.
Duque-Duarte then attempted to flee the scene but his vehicle was damaged so badly, his car would not steer causing him to cross back over both lanes of traffic a second time, before hitting a dirt embankment where his car came to rest, police added.
Both Duque-Duarte and a passenger sustained minor injuries. Both refused medical attention at the scene, police said.
During the course of the investigation, Duque-Duarte was found to be intoxicated, police said.
He was arrested for DWI and processed at the Ramapo Police Station. He is scheduled to appear in court on Thursday, March 2.
