Brito-Avalos arrived at church around 6:30 a.m. Sunday looking to retrieve a wallet and phone he had left behind the previous evening. A 74-year-old church attendant was returning his belongings when Brito-Avalos without provocation beat and choked him. He went on to the next room and tossed a statue at a stained glass window causing damage to an altar microphonea hymnal, candles, a painting and the window valued at a several thousand dollars, according to lohud.com.
The church employee had non-life threatening injuries treated at Good Samartian Hospital. Brito-Avalos was charged with various counts of assault, criminal mischief and harassment. He was arraigned and held on $20,000 bail in the county jail, according to lohud.com.
