A bench trial convicted the 45-year-old Perez-Coira of two counts of second-degree murder, one count of first-degree attempted sexual criminal act and one count of first-degree attempted rape.
Perez-Coira and the victim, 55-year-old Deborah Burns, were acquainted with each other before he attacked her sometime between Dec. 24 and Dec. 26 2013.
Zugibe said: “The defendant took the life of an innocent woman during a vicious sexual assault. I can only hope that the victim’s family finds some measure of comfort and solace knowing her attacker will be sentenced to at least 25 years as punishment for his savagery.”
