Guatemala native Ruben Suchite Torres, 18, found unconscious on a street in the Rockland County village in late June, succumbed to his injuries on Saturday, July 3, according to a report by lohud.com.
The Rockland County District Attorney's Office announced Wednesday that the 16-year-old suspect, Jiwan Coleman, has been indicted on murder and robbery charges, according to lohud.com.
He is being held on $3.5 million bail.
Police are now saying they believe Torres was attacked with a rock, the lohud.com story said.
Dany Marroquin, 28, who worked with the victim at the Nanuet Hotel & Restaurant, set up a GoFundMe account to cover Torres’ funeral expenses and to aid his grieving family.
So far it has surpassed its initial goal of $5,000 and, as of Tuesday, had raised $7,855.
Marroquin praised Torres as a responsible kid and a hard worker who had to overcome a lot of hardships.
Torres was attending high school and washing dishes several nights a week to help support his family.
Marroquin said the teen’s mother, Victoria Torres, and brothers still live in Guatemala.
He shared a studio apartment in Spring Valley with his father, Mario Suchite Garcia, his friend said.
