The arrest came about when the officer stopped a car on Route 202 in Pomona to investigate a vehicle and traffic offense, according to officials.
The driver, who exhibited signs of intoxication, failed on-scene field sobriety tests and was taken into custody, police report.
The suspect was charged with DWI; his blood alcohol content was over twice the legal limit, according to officials.
The defendant was released on bail and is scheduled to appear in Ramapo Town Court next month to answer the charge, police report.
Ramapo police officers investigated seven motor vehicle accidents on Friday.
Sites of the accidents included Route 306 in Wesley Hills; Moccasin Place in Wesley Hills; Orchard Street in Hillcrest; Route 59 in Viola; Route 59 in Monsey; Viola Road in Viola; and Route 17 in Ramapo.
Two of the accidents involved injuries, according to officials.
Ramapo police handled 116 calls Friday, including 14 alarm activations, a fire and 10 medical emergencies.
Two arrests were made. Charges included DWI and criminal possession of a controlled substance, according to officials.
