Dog Rescued After Being Left In Hot Car At New City ShopRite

NEW CITY, N.Y. -- The Rockland County Sheriff's Office rescued a dog left in a hot car and arrested a Lodi, N.J., woman for leaving it behind while she was visiting someone at the Rockland County Jail in New City, according to police.

Paige Sheehan, 40, allegedly locked her dog in the car on Saturday, June 18 after being told by Rockland County Jail staff she couldn't bring the canine inside. She was also advised that due to the high outside temperatures she could not leave the dog in her vehicle, according to Rockland County Sheriff Louis Falco III.

Rockland County Sgt. Stobbe discovered Sheehan’s vehicle parked at the New City ShopRite, 66 N. Main St. with the dog inside. The engine was off and the windows open only a little. The outside temperature was 86 degrees.

Sgt. Ford and officer Perrone assisted Stobbe, and entry was made into the vehicle. The dog was removed and transported to Hi-Tor animal shelter for evaluation and safekeeping.

Sheehan was charged with violation of the Agricultural and Markets Law (353-d), prohibiting the confinement of a companion animal in a vehicle during extreme temperatures.

She was released on summons pending a court appearance.
