Known to many as "Hawk" or "Whit", Whitaker served in the Patrol Division, Detective Bureau, and Director of the Police Academy at various points in his career, which spanned from 1960 to 1988.
He was well known in police circles throughout New York State for his role in police officer recruit training.
Whitaker coordinated the training of police officers from Rockland, Orange, Ulster, Sullivan and Greene Counties from the spring of 1970 to the fall of 1979, police said.
