SUFFERN, N.Y. -- George E. Heller, 91, passed away June 8, 2016.
He was born Feb. 12, 1925, in Maybrook, to Lillian Griffin Heller and William Walter Heller. He moved to Sloatsburg around the age of 16.
On April 18, 1945, he married Mabel Lewis from Sloatsburg. They lived in Mahwah for a short period and then lived the rest of their lives in Sloatsburg.
Heller is survived by his daughter Carol and her husband Robert Heffernan from Baden Lake, N.C.; and his son, George Jr. and his wife Gloria Heller from Stormville; six grandchildren and their spouses, Robert and Tara Heffernan of Greensboro, N.C., Derrick and Laura Heffernan of Greensboro, N.C., Gennifer and Tom Bradshaw of St Clair Shores, Mich., Georgette and Kevin Pobursky of Troy, Mich., Geodi and Ken Parsons of Lagrangeville and Rod Schick of Livonia, Mich.; and great-grandchildren Victoria, Bobby and Craig Heffernan, Ava, Craig and Hudson Heffernan, Dondero Bradshaw Stewart, Micah and Braeden Pobursky, Hailey, Hunter, Stryder and Brogan Parsons and Katie, Alyssa and Corey Schick.
Heller left home to proudly to serve his country in World War II in Company D 101st Parachute infantry. He was a parachute rifleman sharpshooter. He was wounded in the Battle of the Bulge, where his right hand almost was blown off.
He worked in Avon and Greenstein’s Rheingold Distributors both in Suffern and later retired from Wayne Beverages of Goshen.
He was a member of Sloatsburg Fire Company for 56 years and served as chief for some of those years. He loved his fireman family/team and everyone in Sloatsburg. He would not stand for anyone to say something against Sloatsburg or his country.
Visitation will be from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Sunday at Scarr Funeral Home Inc., 160 Orange Ave., Suffern. There will be a funeral service at 10 a.m. Monday, and he will be laid to rest at FW Loescher Veteran’s Cemetery in New Hempstead.
There will be a luncheon at the Sloatsburg Firehouse for all to share stories after the burial.
