Franklin died in an accident with other bicycles in the first leg of the tour; no cars were involved, according to reports.
The death brought an outcry of sympathy from police Unity Tour participants throughout New Jersey and New York, including Lyndhurst, Ramapo, Wayne.
Franklin's organs were donated, in accordance with his wishes, in a final act of community service.
The Police Unity Tour is a 320-mile bike ride to honor officers who have died in the line of duty. It's also a fundraiser for the National Law Enforcement Officer's Memorial and Museum.
