Zebrowski, Day and County Fire Coordinator Gordon Wren Jr. were joined by fire chiefs and firefighters from across the county at the Rockland County Fire Training Center on Firemens Memorial Drive, according to a statement.
Calling the recent enforcement of fire codes in the village and town a "systemic failure," the officials said the state should take the lead in enforcing the codes, particularly after information came to light suggesting that there were "several schools that contain(ed) serious violations after they were signed off on by the same Ramapo Fire Inspector."
Zebrowski and Day have both taken strides in recent years to alleviate the problems resulting from illegal housing and an apparent lack of enforcement regarding state and local zoning and fire codes.
Both officials have also worked closely with local fire departments and first responders in order to place the issues at the forefront of Rockland's collective consciousness, according to a statement.
“The systemic and pervasive lack of code enforcement in Ramapo and Spring Valley is a clear and present danger to the safety and well-being of our citizens," Zebrowksi said in a statement. "For two years, I have been documenting this lawlessness and calling on the state to intervene."
Day echoed Zebrowski's sentiments.
"I am calling on the state to empower the county of Rockland to perform fire inspections in Ramapo,” Day said. “Ramapo is clearly not able to handle this very important job. The county is ready, willing and able to step in. Children are at risk. We want the state to give us the authority to correct this very dangerous situation.”
