Students Share Historic Pride For Rockland County At Annual Conference

SUFFERN, N.Y. -- Art, shops, schools, prominent figures -- all through the lens of Rockland County's history. That's what high school students shared at Wednesday's 4th Annual Rockland County High School Local History Conference at SUNY Rockland Community College.

Prominent local figures including Rockland County Executive Ed Day, Rockland County Legislator Michael Grant, Sheriff Lou Falco, and former County Executive C. Scott Vanderhoef kicked off the event.

Then small teams representing 11 high schools gave Power Point presentations on the history of their towns.

"In school, students tend to learn American history but they don't necessarily learn local history," said Susan Deeks, executive director of the Historical Society of Rockland County. "An event like this gives young people an opportunity to learn about and appreciate their county, and its history.

The presentations covered Rockland's past 50 years.

The HSRC, along with the Family of John T. and Mary A. Grant, co-sponsored the event.
