Teaching clients to speak and write in English is a main priority, which helps clients access and keep jobs, interact at their children's schools, navigate various systems, such as healthcare, and attain U.S. citizenship.
It's a primary purpose of K.N.L, as it its known, a "respected Haitian non-profit community organization" established in Rockland County in 1987," said K.N.L. Executive Director Renold Julien.
"The organization assists Rockland's substantial and growing Haitian community, while raising awareness and appreciation of the Haitian culture and promoting understanding among all communities within the County," Julien added.
K.N.L., through volunteers, also helps clients learn to read and write in their native language, while a fundamental focus is preventing the use of alcohol, tobacco and other drugs, through adult- and family-oriented activities.
The center offers counseling, home assistance, English classes, outreach and referral, recreational activities, consultation and dissemination of general information, assistance to the public, upon request and public education.
