Between August 2011 and July 2013, 16 recommendations were made for the district, and state Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli says officials wholly implemented only two and somewhat implemented eight, according to lohud.com.
A follow-up audit in January 2016 found the district did not properly budget over the last three years. In 2012-13 and 2014-15, appropriations were underestimated by $9.2 million and $738,000, respectively and overestimated by $8.9 million during the 2013-14 year, according to lohud.com.
As a result of these findings, a one-year deal was approved by the Senate and Assembly that will require the school board to submit its budget for approval by the state education commissioner, who will have the power to make changes to the spending plan. In return, the school district will receive $3 million to revive programs and services that have been cut throughout the year, according to lohud.com.
