Airmont Property Taxes Rise 8.5 Percent

AIRMONT, N.Y. -- The mayor and trustees of Airmont voted this week to increase residents’ property taxes by 8.5 percent, which will prevent the town from taking part in the state's property tax freeze because it is over the qualifying two percent state cap on the property tax levy, according to the Rockland County Times.

The new increase, above the cap, will make Airmont residents ineligible for the New York State property tax freeze credit that reimburses qualifying homeowners for increases in local property taxes on their primary residences, the report said.

The program encourages governments and school districts to comply with the tax cap and develop plans to reduce costs, said the Rockland County Times.

Airmont residents received the tax credit for 2014 and 2015. The total for the new 2016 budget is $3,320,337 with $400,00 allocated for street improvements, which is 12 percent of the total budget. Other expenses in the budget include $50,000 for drainage and the village attorney’s expense was raised rom $10,000 in 2015 to $24,000 in the new budget, reported the Rockland County Times.
