"You've set an incredible example for all the students of our school by working hard and persisting at something you love and showing us that success is possible," Suffern Middle School Principal Brian Fox said, before he presented Suffern's Grace VanderWaal with a sweatshirt signed by all of her classmates in seventh grade.
The village of Suffern and it's residents finally got the chance to congratulate her VanderWaal on winning NBC's "America's Got Talent" in September at a parade held on Saturday.
VanderWaal rode in a convertible down Lafayette Avenue in the parade, which culminated on Washington Avenue with a ceremony where the 12 year old was lauded and presented with congratulatory gifts from local officials, businesses, and organizations.
These included the "Key to Rockland County," a proclamation declaring Oct. 1 "Grace VanderWaal Day," a ukulele from the village of Suffern, and a Dave & Buster's Power Card.
Throughout the ceremony there were screams, calls of "we love you Grace," and chants calling for VanderWaal to sing at the end.
