Kosher Troops started as a bat mitzvah project and has since blossomed into a nonprofit organization that sends thousands of holiday packages to military personnel all over the world, says co-founder Ava Avidar-Hamburger.
She and Sara Truzman-Fuerst had put their heads together in 2008 to help Sara’s daughter come up with the project around the Purim holiday.
Now Avidar-Hamburger estimates that this year alone, the packages filled with grape juice, gefilte fish, bitter herb roots and more will reach about 900 troops.
The all-volunteer organization has drawn help from local schools and Jewish organizations, she said.
The food is donated by companies like Aron Streits, Manischewitz and Osem, according to Kosher Troops’ website.
The group, which prepares the packages in a warehouse in Valley Cottage, is now in the process of raising funds to help defray shipping costs, she said.
