Carry a flashlight and use reflective tape.
It can be hard for a driver to see people walking the street. If you are out with your child, be sure to have a flashlight on hand and reflective tape on their costume. Flashlights are also handy to help prevent slips, trips and falls.
Keep an eye out for dogs.
Halloween can make dogs stressed and unpredictable. Remind kids to never approach any dog, even if it’s one you know. If you’re in costume, it may not recognize you.
Beware of lit candles.
Sometimes jack o’ lanterns will have real candles inside them. Capes, long dresses or wigs can brush against these and catch fire.
Examine treats before ingesting them.
The ultimate goal of Halloween is to get the most candy possible. Tell your kids not to eat any candy until they get home so you can check to be sure it is commercially wrapped.
Don’t drink and drive.
Children are not the only ones who love Halloween. If you are going to a party, be sure to designate a driver or call a taxi.
Don't enter the home of a stranger.
Remember to tell children not to enter homes, even if they know the person. Make sure to also remind them they should never accept rides from strangers.
Avoid props.
If a child happens to fall and land on a large or heavy prop, they can get seriously injured. Additionally, a sharp prop can cause someone to accidentally get cut or bruised.
Review basic traffic rules.
It’s important to remind kids of basic traffic rules before the night begins, especially stopping before crossing the street, looking both ways and only crossing at crosswalks.
