The hospital's TrueBeam Linear Accelerator system enables doctors and staff to take a radically different approach to treating cancer, thanks to image-guided radiotherapy.
Dr. Shawn Zimberg, medical director, Dr. John Rescigno, associate medical director, and Dr. Raman Kaul currently treat patients at Good Samaritan Hospital using the hospital’s new system.
“TrueBeam makes it possible to deliver accurate image-guided treatments within a few minutes per day," said Zimberg. "At the same time, we can monitor and compensate for tumor motion and that further increases treatment accuracy."
Patients can be treated for cancers ranging from breast, prostate, head and neck to gastrointestinal, brain, lung and GYN using the Linear Accelerator.
Through advances in technology, the TrueBeam system produces three-dimensional images used to fine-tune tumor targeting and more quickly complete a treatment on solid adult tumors. This results in greater patient comfort, increased precision and the application of fewer x-ray dosages.
“Imaging is an essential part of modern-day, targeted radiotherapy,” said Zimberg. “This machine allows us to minimize the amount of x-rays needed to generate an image -- and that’s good for our patients.”
TrueBeam can be used for many forms of advanced treatments such intensity-modulated radiotherapy, RapidArc® radiotherapy technology and Gated RapidArc. “Each of these approaches is appropriate for a certain type of clinical situation,” said Zimberg. “With TrueBeam, we can choose the optimal approach for our patients.”
