Wilson Castillo Diaz, age 26, of Westbury, was arrested Tuesday, Oct. 22, following an investigation by the Nassau County Police Department’s Special Victims Squad. The case was publicized Friday, Nov. 1.
According to police, Diaz raped a 5-year-old girl in Westbury on Wednesday, Oct. 16. Authorities did not elaborate on the nature of his relationship to the child.
The victim was taken to a hospital and evaluated following the alleged attack.
Speaking at a press conference, Nassau County Police Commissioner Patrick Ryder said Diaz illegally entered the United States near Rio Grande, Texas, in 2014, when he was 16 years old. He was arrested by US Border Patrol, released, and later failed to appear for his immigration court hearing.
The department is investigating whether he has any other alleged victims.
“In this case, this 26-year-old man did not wake up one day and decide ‘I’m going to rape a five-year-old girl.’ So we believe there may be more victims out there,” Ryder told reporters.
Diaz is charged with rape, attempted rape, and endangering the welfare of a child.
He was arraigned in First District Court in Hempstead on Wednesday, Oct. 23.
The Nassau County District Attorney’s Office said it had notified the US Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
