These Long Island Schools Honored For Excellent Scholars, Athletes Just 35 high schools across Long Island were given a special designation for their stellar athletes who double as stellar academics. The New York State Public High School Athletic Association, or NYSPHSAA, announced its 2022-2023 “School of Distinction” list on Thursday, July 27. Out of all 84 schools given the award, 35 were from Long Island. In order to qualify, a high school must have 100 percent of its varsity teams qualify for a “Scholar-Athlete team award,” which designates that the team’s average GPA is greater than or equal to a 90. 41 From Long Island Named Regeneron Science Scholars A total of 41 of Long Island’s best and brightest high school seniors were among 300 chosen to compete with some of the nation’s top students in the Regeneron Science Talent Search competition. The 300 scholars were chosen out of 1,760 applications that were received from 611 high schools across 49 states. Antoinette 'Anne' Ercolano Of Nesconset, Aide For 35 Years In Smithtown Schools A longtime Long Island school aide, Antoinette “Anne” Ercolano, of Nesconset, died Wednesday, July 17. Ercolano worked as a school aide in the Smithtown Central School District for more than 35 years, including at Great Hollow Middle School and Smithtown High Schools East and West. She was Brooklyn to Philomena (Ferrara) and Rocco Recce, Ercolano and educated at St. Thomas Aquinas School and the Brooklyn Manual Training High School.  In 1944, Ercolano enlisted in the United States Naval Reserve (Women’s Reserve), known as the WAVES (Women Accepted for Volunteer Emergency Service).
