New Law Will Put A Student On Every School Board In NY
There will soon be a student on every school board in New York.A new law requiring all state boards of education to have at least one student member will take effect on July 1, 2025. The students will attend public meetings, but not executive sessions, and won't be allowed to vote. Gov. Kathy Hochul signed the bill on Thursday, Sept. 5. It will also remove the current law requirement that a student member seat be authorized by referendum of the voters of the district. 19: Here's Percentage Of NYers Who Say They Gained Weight, Felt Depressed During Pandemic
Millions of New Yorkers may experience lasting effects of the COVID-19 pandemic after reporting weight gain and depression, according to a newly released Siena College study. In a poll conducted between Wednesday, June 16 and Tuesday, June 29 of hundreds of New Yorkers, 49 percent said that they gained weight during the yearlong pandemic, while more than half (51 percent) said that they felt depressed while contending with the 16-month crisis. 19: Social Distance Rules For Students Far Shorter Than For Adults
The guidelines for social distancing at public schools recommend far less space between people than the 6 feet standard encouraged throughout much of the pandemic. On Tuesday, Feb. 23, Massachusetts announced a plan to return all elementary school students to the classroom by April. Three Long Island School Budgets Voted Down
More than 100 Long Island school districts saw their budgets passed this week, though at least three will be up for a revote later this summer before the next academic year. In total, 119 school budgets passed this week, though some ballots are still being counted after New York’s first all-mail election process due to the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak. In Uniondale, the district’s proposed $211 million was defeated by a final tally of 1,157 to 885, a difference of 272 votes. All public and private schools on Long Island will be closed for two weeks to help combat the spread of the novel strain of the coronavirus. The closures in Nassau and Suffolk counties start on Monday, March 16 and last through Friday, March 27, counties executives Laura Curran of Nassau and Steve Bellone of Suffolk announced on Sunday, March 15. A newly released study from Niche.com determined the best school districts for 2020 by analyzing the “key statistics and millions of reviews from students and parents” using data from the U.S. Department of Education.
