An unprovoked attack on a lesbian couple at a Long Island beach has resulted in hate crime charges against one of two men believed responsible.
Joseph Kess, age 40, of Patchogue, was indicted for assault and criminal mischief in Suffolk County Court on Wednesday, June 28, in connection with the Mother’s Day attack at Patchogue’s Mascot Dock.
According to prosecutors, two young women were at the beach on May 14, 2023, watching the sunset and taking photos together, when Kess and another man began making derogatory comments about their sexual orientation.

ATV Crash: 26-Year-Old In Critical Condition, Suspect Charged With DWI After Long Island Wreck
A Long Island man is facing DWI charges after he allegedly caused an ATV crash that sent a 26-year-old woman to the hospital.
The crash happened at around 8 p.m. Saturday, June 10, in Brookhaven, on Bellport Avenue near Louise Avenue.
Suffolk County Police said Tayquan Mayodunmore, age 29, of Bellport, was driving the ATV while intoxicated when the vehicle overturned.
The crash caused his passenger, Jessilyn Johnson, of Medford, to strike her head on the pavement, police said.
She was taken by police helicopter to Stony Brook University Hospital in critical condition.

Vincent Franco, of Patchogue, hit it big on the Cash X20 scratch-off game, according to the New York Lottery.
Franco received a lump sum payment of $494,760 after paying taxes.
The lucky ticket was purchased in Holbrook, at the Akshar Card & Gift at 342 Union Avenue.
As of Tuesday, June 6, there were two top prizes remaining on the Cash X20 ticket, lottery officials said.

Cooking Oil Thieves Nabbed On Long Island, Police Say
Two Long Island men have been charged with stealing cooking oil from several restaurants.
The three thefts took place in Suffolk County in May and June in Medford and Patchogue, said the Suffolk County Police.
According to Suffolk County Police Gregory Smith, age 39, and Andrew DeMarco, age 38, both of Farmingville, were arrested on Monday, June 5, for stealing cooking oil from three different restaurants on five occasions.
Smith drove a rented box truck and siphoned the oil into a 500-gallon container while DeMarco drove a 2023 Honda Accord to act as a lookout, police said.
