A Nassau County moving company owner and a Passaic County woman who worked for him admitted in federal court that they extorted customers out of nearly $550,000 with the old “low-ball” scam.
Lior Atiyas, 42, of Hewlett, Long Island began regularly low-balling estimates to move household goods, then jacking up the price by two to three times once the items were on the trucks, in early 2016, U.S. Attorney Craig Carpenito said Friday.
He then refused to deliver the goods until the customers paid up, Carpenito said.

Feds: Trio Stole $1.5M Worth Of High-End Vehicles Out Of NJ, Rockland, CT, Long Island
A trio of thieves who snatched high-end vehicles in New Jersey, Rockland County, Long Island and Connecticut often used one stolen car to swipe another, federal authorities said.
In one instance, they said, the Essex County crew members stole a Maserati GranTurisimo at the Jersey Shore and drove it to New City in Rockland, where they took a Range Rover and a Porsche.
A predawn police pursuit followed before the Maserati driver hit the gas and slammed it head-on into a police vehicle, U.S. Attorney Craig Carpenito said.

Man Seriously Injured In Crash Between Van, Box Truck On Long Island Expressway
A man was seriously injured in a crash between a van and box truck on the Long Island Expressway.
It happened near Exit 50 in Melville on Monday, Sept. 30 at approximately 10:40 a.m., Suffolk County Police said.
Jeffrey Browne, 30, of East Islip, was driving a 2018 black Ford van eastbound when the van struck the rear of a 2007 Freightliner box truck stopped in traffic in the eastbound lane.
Browne was airlifted to Stony Brook University Hospital for treatment of serious but not life-threatening injuries.
