A Hicksville woman was arrested for drunk driving under Leandra’s Law after a domestic dispute escalated in Mineola, Nassau County police announced on Monday, Jan. 13.
Elizabeth Maldonado, 34, allegedly punched her husband during an argument at a restaurant in Mineola on Sunday, Jan. 12, at approximately 11:10 p.m., police said. After the altercation, Maldonado left the scene in a 2022 Dodge Durango with their three children, ages 6, 7, and 14, as well as another 14-year-old boy, according to authorities.

An elderly man and woman killed in a Sunday evening crash in Levittown have been identified, Nassau County police announced on Monday, Jan. 6.
The fatal accident occurred at 5:30 p.m. on Loring Road, detectives said.
Gerhard Frobart, 89, of Farmingdale, was driving a 2001 Ford Taurus southbound with Ella Gimpel, 88, of East Meadow, as his passenger when the car veered off the roadway and struck a utility pole, police said.
Frobart was pronounced dead at the scene. Gimpel, who suffered critical injuries, was transported by Nassau County medics to a nearby hospital, where she later died.…

Long Island leaders are honoring two beloved educators a year after they were killed in a bus crash.
The Town of Oyster Bay unveiled two new street signs in Farmingdale honoring late Farmingdale High School band director Gina Pellettiere and retired teacher Beatrice “Bea” Ferrari during a ceremony held Tuesday, Oct. 8.
Pellettiere, age 43, of Massapequa, and Ferrari, age 77, of Farmingdale, died when a charter bus carrying the school’s marching band to a band camp in Pennsylvania overturned on I-84 in Orange County, in the town of Wawayanda, on Sept. 21, 2023.

Support is building for the family of a young father and wrestling standout from Long Island who was killed in a shooting.
Lee Mauras, age 22, originally from Hempstead, was shot at around 2:30 a.m. Sunday, Oct. 6, in a parking lot in downtown Portland, Oregon, police told local station KATU. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Two women are facing charges after allegedly abandoning several cats at a Long Island park.
The Suffolk County SPCA said Crystal Cahill, age 39, of Amityville, and Catherine Gropper, age 32, of Massapequa, in Nassau County, trapped cats in East Islip under the pretense of neutering and returning the cats, but instead left three adult cats in Tanner Park in Copiague.
