The alleged thief, 55-year-old Andre Christmas of Uniondale, was arrested at approximately 6 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 10 in Hempstead for an alleged string of robberies. Long Island House Fire: 1 Killed, 8 Evacuated An early-morning fire at a Long Island home with nearly 10 people inside has left one dead and many others displaced, officials said. It happened in Hempstead on Monday, Nov. 13, according to Nassau County Police. At approximately 5:40 a.m., the Devon Road home went up in flames with nine people inside. The Hempstead Fire Department was able to extinguish the fire and evacuate eight people. The incident occurred just before 11:30 a.m. on Monday, Oct. 5 in Hempstead. Two Shot, One Fatally, Outside Long Island Apartment Two men were shot, one fatally, outside a Long Island apartment. It happened just before 4 a.m.on Sunday, Sept. 6 in Hempstead. Village of Hempstead Police Officers responded to 43 High St. for a call of persons shot by an unknown subject from a vehicle.  Upon arrival, officers located two men with gunshot wounds, Nassau County Police said.  The two men were transported to area hospitals.  A 22-year-old succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead by a physician.
