New York Gov. Kathy Hochul is urging residents to stay safe and hydrated as hot, humid air rolls into much of the state ahead of severe storms predicted to bring heavy rains and flash flooding. In an announcement on Monday, July 8, Hochul warned that above-average temperatures and high humidity would arrive in the state in the next few days. A new nationwide health advisory has been issued by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) as cases of potentially fatal flesh-eating bacteria continue to climb. Vibrio vulnificus infections have killed at least 13 people on the Eastern Seaboard this year and cause an estimated 80,000 illnesses annually in the United States. Updated story: Fifth Monkeypox Cases Confirmed In NY Two new presumed monkeypox cases have been reported in New York, bringing the total number of patients being evaluated for the virus up to four. Nassau County Beaches Closed To Bathing Due To Bacteria Levels
A pair of Long Island beaches have closed to bathing due to elevated bacteria levels. The Nassau County Department of Health said that effective Thursday, July 15, the Biltmore Beach Club in Massapequa is closed. Philip Healey Beach in Massapequa is remaining closed to bathing as well. Both beaches will be closed until testing shows bacteria levels "within acceptable limits," the health department said. A round of heavy thunderstorms will sweep through the region bringing some relief from the hot and sticky stretch of days by ushering in a more comfortable air mass from Canada.
