18-Year-Old Speeding, On Phone Moments Before Crash Killing Long Island Man, DA Says
An 18-year-old has been charged in connection with an alleged distracted driving crash that killed a Long Island man.
Nicolas Apostolides, of West Babylon, was arraigned on manslaughter and related charges in Suffolk County Court on Friday, Dec. 1, in the death of David Martinez.
According to prosecutors, Apostolides was speeding and using his phone when he ran a red light and crashed into another car on Straight Path in West Babylon at around 5:30 a.m. on Sunday, April 16.

Hundreds of Long Island drivers were issued tickets during the holiday weekend as part of a statewide crackdown on distracted and dangerous driving, police said.
From Friday, Sept. 1 to Monday, Sept. 4, the New York State Police arrested over a dozen people for driving under the influence and handed out hundreds more tickets on Long Island, the department announced.
Of the 572 tickets given, 165 of them were for speeding, 32 were for distracted driving, 12 were for child restraint or seatbelt violations, and three were for violations of the Move Over Law.

The final tally is in, and New York State Police troopers dished out more than 12,000 tickets and arrested nearly 150 motorists for alleged impaired driving, authorities announced.
Between Wednesday, Nov. 24, and Sunday, Nov. 28, New York State Police issued 12,975 tickets during their annual Thanksgiving holiday traffic enforcement period, down slightly from the previous year’s campaign.

Hundreds Face DWI, Speeding, Other Charges In Long Island State Police Memorial Day Crackdown
New York State Police troopers on Long Island dished out hundreds of tickets during Memorial Day Weekend to everyone from impaired motorists to speeding drivers.
During the special enforcement campaign, which was held from Friday, May 22 through 3 a.m. on Tuesday, May 26, troopers issued more than 8,900 tickets, including 203 for alleged DWI.
Troopers investigated 457 crashes during the detail, which resulted in injuries to 11 New Yorkers. There were also two fatal crashes during the holiday weekend.
