A volunteer firefighter on Long Island is accused of altering public records in order to give himself and his relatives credit for emergency calls they never responded to. James Burns, age 27, of Cutchogue, was arrested Wednesday, March 6, following an investigation by the Suffolk County DA’s Public Corruption Squad. Prosecutors said Burns illegally accessed an internal computer system at the Cutchogue Fire Department in September 2023 and made 96 changes to the records of 55 prior emergency calls. Firefighters, friends, and acquaintances alike are grieving for a Long Island firefighter after her recent and sudden death. Kathie Cibulski died on Tuesday, Aug. 1 following a brief and recent battle with cancer, according to an announcement by the Cutchogue Fire Department. The 56-year-old Mattituck native joined the department in 2004. Teens Saved From Near-Drowning On Long Island Sound After Boat Breaks Down
Two teenagers are lucky to be alive after being pulled from Long Island Sound miles away from shore. Emergency crews were called shortly after 5 p.m. Thursday, July 5, after a 23-foot boat lost power about three miles north of Cutchogue, according to Southold Town Police. The 18-year-old operator told dispatchers that a 16-year-old boy and 16-year-old girl who were on the boat had jumped into the water without life jackets. Firefighters battled a barn fire on Long Island in a garage-type structure that was in danger of spreading to an adjacent barn. The blaze broke out around 1 a.m., Sunday, May 15 at 6900 Wickham Ave., in Mattituck, a hamlet on Long Island's North Fork. The number of people who have died on Long Island during the worst winter Nor'easter in several years has reached four. The first man drowned at about 8:30 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 29, in Suffolk County after falling into a swimming pool while clearing snow at his home in Cutchogue, said Southold Police Det. Man Charged With BWI In Long Island Boat Crash That Killed One, Injured Three
An East Northport man has been charged with boating while intoxicated following a powerboat crash that left one woman dead and three others injured. Francesco Distefano, 48, was charged on Monday, Nov. 11, following the Sunday, Nov. 10 crash that took place around 9:17 p.m. when a 39-foot Cobalt powerboat he was allegedly piloting smashed into a bulkhead fronting on Great Peconic Bay, Southhold Police said.
