Free Breakfast, Lunch Program Launches At Long Island School District
A new program will provide students at every grade level free meals throughout the school day, a district on Long Island announced. Starting Friday, March 1, students in the Connetquot School District, located in Islip, will be able to get breakfast and lunch for free, the district announced. Native American Mascot Ban Prompts Change, Anger Among Long Island Schools
For at least ten Long Island school districts, a big change is underway. The New York State Board of Regents voted on Tuesday, April 18 to ban the use of Native American names, mascots, or logos by public schools across the state of New York. The ruling, which is an addition to the existing Regulations of the Commissioner of Education, will require school districts to make a commitment to the rule by the end of this school year. Dozens of teachers have called out of working at a Long Island high school following new cases of COVID-19. Last week, on consecutive days, 38 and then 45 Connetquot teachers called in sick, citing concerns about the district’s handling of the outbreak following a rash of new cases. Three Teens Arrested For Conspiring To Detonate Bomb At Connetquot High School
Suffolk County Police arrested three teenagers for conspiring to build a bomb to detonate at a Bohemia high school. Fifth Precinct officers responded to Connetquot High School, located at 190 7th St., on Thursday, May 2, after a school administrator called the police to say he was informed by multiple students that they overheard three students during the bus ride home on Wednesday, May 1, discussing building a bomb to detonate at the school, police said. Popular Connetquot Schools Music Director Dies At Age 45
Students, family, and friends are mourning the loss of a popular music teacher who at age 45 Jon-Michael Lasher, of Selden, who was known for his gift of playing the saxophone, died on Monday, April 22 after battling cancer for more than a decade. The band director at Connetquot High School in Bohemia since 2003, district officials said Lasher was a champion for music and dedicated to his students. Lasher, who grew up in Bohemia, attended SUNY Potsdam where he earned a bachelor's degree in music education. He received a master's degree in music performance from Duquesne University and a ce…
