Students at Northport Middle School have reportedly been getting sick from odors that are filling the school from an unknown source. Some students were forced to miss weeks of classes over the past year due to the smell impacting them.
According to News 12, teachers, and students first reported the odor as far back as 2017, and a wing of the school had to be evacuated and closed for a stretch. Hazardous materials were later found in a warehouse under a classroom.
The district has since removed any hazardous materials from the building and has preformed environmental testing in the area.
Schools Superintendent Robert Banzer said that he will be recommending that the Board of Trustees conduct soil testing at the Northport Middle School. He is also planning to create a subcommittee to work with the district’s environmental consultants to determine the scope of the work.
“I understand there are new families to the building who may not be aware of the results of the testing that has been performed in the past,” he said. “I trust that you will find the district has been responsive to the concerns of the school community, and has committed significant resources to ensure the health and safety of our students and staff.
“Please be assured that the Board and I share this same core value. For this reason, I expect the Board to approve my recommendations at the (Thursday), Nov. 7 meeting.
