The incident took place around 3 a.m., Thursday, Oct. 31, at an occupied home on Suffolk Down, said Suffolk County Police.
According to detectives, three men, one armed with what appeared to be a handgun, entered the home and confronted a man and woman who live in a rear bedroom, police said.
The suspects attempted to steal a safe but dropped it as they fled the home.
During the burglary, the woman was struck in the head with a hammer by one of the suspects, police said.
She was treated and released at a local hospital.
Detectives believe the burglary was targeted.
