First responders were dispatched to a Homer Avenue home in Deer Park at approximately 11:45 a.m. on Monday, Dec. 13, where there was a report of a dog trapped after a house fire broke out.
Upon arrival, police said that officers found “thick, black smoke coming from the home,” and a resident informed them that a dog and cat were still inside the residence.
Suffolk County Police Officers Zakary Goldbach, Joaquin Castillo, and Justin Oshea entered the home, where Castillo located the dog and handed the animal to Goldbach, who brought the animal outside.
Officers continued to search for the cat, which was able to safely leave the house on its own.
All three officers were able to safely get out of the home and were taken to South Shore University Hospital in Bay Shore for treatment of smoke inhalation. The dog was reunited with its family outside.
No other injuries were reported. The cause of the fire remains under investigation by Suffolk County Police Arson Section detectives.
