Police: Southern State Stop Leads To Discovery Of Drunk Driver With Toddler In Mercedes-Benz

A traffic violation stop on the Southern State Parkway led to the discovery of a man driving drunk with a toddler in the car.

It happened on Wednesday, Sept. 11 at 4:40 p.m. in Rockville Centre.

According to police, an officer on patrol observed Stanislav Shvartsman, 40, of Queens, operating a 2020 Mercedes Benz traveling eastbound on the Southern State Parkway, Nassau County Police said. The officer observed Shvartsman change lanes multiple times without signaling and initiated a vehicle and traffic law stop.

During the investigation,  Shvartsman attempted to flee the scene and drove away, police said. The officer followed the vehicle while activating his emergency lights and siren. A

A subsequent investigation was conducted and Shvartsman was placed under arrest without further incident. Shvartsman’s 13-month-old child was a passenger in the vehicle, said police. The child was left in the custody of a family member. No injuries were reported.

Shvartsman was charged with driving while intoxicated, aggravated driving while intoxicated (child under 16) under Leandra's Law, endangering the welfare of a child, reckless driving, unlawful fleeing a police officer in a motor vehicle and multiple traffic infractions. 

 He will be arraigned Thursday, Sept. 12 at First District Court in Hempstead.
